This is the first major study of Alekhine's Defence for several years. Written in figurine algebraic notation, it is an exhaustive analysis of the Defence and its variations by a leading exponent. Popularised by Alekhine over fifty years ago, the half-open defence 1.e4 Nf6 is once again being used to considerable effect in firts-class chess.

Black encourages White to set up a strong pawn centre in expectation of mounting a counter-attack. As planned by Black, it is easy for White to over-reach and find his position in ruins. However, it is also easy for Black to fail to find enough counter-play and to be quickly swamped.

The author
Vlastimil Hort, Czechoslovakia's leading Grandmaster and currently ranked about tenth in the world, is an authority on half-open defences. He has written several books, including The Modern Defence and The Best Move, also available from Adam & Charles Black.
There is also a special contribution by Grandmaster Raymond Keene on two other half-open defences, the Nimzovich and Owen's Defence.
