Paul Keres was one of the greatest players in chess history. A leading contender for the world championship for a third of a century, his modesty, honesty and open-minded approach to chess made him popular with chess enthusiasts the world over.

Together with Paul Keres: The Road to the Top, this completes the most comprehensive collection of annotated Keres games ever published. We join his chess career after his rise into the world's chess elite. During the next quarter-century Keres developed and refined his chess into a mature positional style, though always retaining the elegant attacking flair that characterised his ascent to the top.

John Nunn has selected and annotated the finest of Keres' games from 1962 to his death in 1975.

Paul Keres was a national hero in his native Estonia and is generally regarded as the strongest player never to become world champion. As a teenager he was able to hold his own against the likes of Alekhine and Capablanca.

John Nunn is one of the world's top grandmasters, and a key member of the England team. He has won four individual gold medals at chess olympiads, and finished sixth overall in the World Cup 1989. He is Batsford's Specialist Chess Adviser.
